Becoming an Actor/Actress in Nollywood

Developing an acting career in Nollywood  requires an entrepreneurial mindset: a desire to create your own opportunities while working within a system where rewards are often delayed.

In what ways do you take charge of your own career?
"I've always known that the audition route would not be my way. I accepted that very early on in my career when I realized that no matter how much you prepare or how talented you are, the best person doesn't always book the role.
My Advice to all the Upcoming Artistes in Nollywood
  • Make sure you're in a class where the coach cares about you as an actor and not just your money.
  • Follow through on all contacts you've made, you never know where people will in up being in a year or two.
  • Be proactive in your career.
  • Learn the business of acting and not just the craft!
  • Keep your word and have integrity.
  • Show up on time.
  • Be professional on set and off.
  • Find a great manager and agent to be a part of your team. They work with you, not you for them or them for you.
  • Be flexible and able to make adjustments artistically in class and on set, in other words... Don't be difficult!
  • Don't forget to live in the moment everyday despite your circumstances.
  • Time is the most important gift in your life and put God first, then your career, then you, and then your family, friends and loved ones.

African Men

Here in Africa, we don’t even know the Heroes, we don’t have ideas of those that has bright future and those that does not. An average African man you see on the streets, looking frustrated and warn out may be the brain behind an international project that others celebrate.
The Foreigners underestimate African men, that was why they have fallen victims of African fraud, Africans can be exploited but they can never be fooled , why the lower ranks of the military obeys the higher Ranks is not because the latter shoots better, it’s to set peace in the system while their dreams to grow become a reality, here in Africa, we have a common believe that the small will later become the Big, Our continent is still developing, while the grasses wither at the sea shore, we must wonder what has gone wrong from the root of the waters, but why the desert grasses seize to flourish, we see no dangers with the action for the harsh sun will ever smite again
I point this out to you; things don’t go the normal way here in Africa. Why will an African man graduate from the university with good grades yet he will not find a place to work, the lions have lost their Den to the monkeys, and antelopes are swimming freely in the waters of the crocodiles.
I know it happens here, things are going wrong amongst ourselves, but we try to fix it. It is with this heavy heart, that an African man leaves, he has a girlfriend who was taken from his hands by the law makers, with a grin, and he knew his purse has gone weird.
It is with this troubled soul, these expectations of mystery, this fear of insecurity that African men leave. They are good yet we have seen that they are not good anymore, there is no opportunity given to the good. They are intelligent yet they are no more intelligent, intelligent ones have been ridiculed and their women taken from them.
Now they have all turned out to be African Men, hunting in their tropical, we must eat, yes we must eat. We must keep our women yes we must keep our women, we must secure our own position in the toughness of this existence, it is with such sensitivity that an African Man leaves.
Now, they start to try out themselves, the farmers will pick their hoe and will never return until the sun fades, the traders will enter the market, with hook or with crook they sell and they trick, computer experts were not rather in the Banks, or the rich telecoms, rather they are in the café, sending mails to the rich and convincing them to be a victim
we the few, that has conditioned our mind to never let go, our empire, our dignity, our ego, our knowledge of the Good and the Bad, at first, it seems we are the African men, retched in the streets yet celebrated, while we strive higher, the greedy politicians became afraid of us, the corrupt emperors will start to consult us, they need our knowledge and lo, they must pay, that was the origin of our survivals
But African men are here, they know about all yet nothing is for them, you come in to exploit them and they trick you. Stop thinking about our retched home, stop watching our uprisings in your televisions, stop sending us soar wines and epidemics, we can work and earn our living, we do not want to imitate the greedy politicians, who instead of constructing the roads, they choose to fly on helicopters . it is because we are Africans, that is why we never learn to vote them out, it is because we are Africans, that is why they use us. Stop using us, I say stop
Girls all over the world want to sleep with an African man, for they know the power of our strength, and the uniqueness of our concepts, they want to use us and dump us, because they know we are Africans that is why they are victims of circumstances. They are victims of their own crime
You can’t use an African man and dump him, you can use him and teach him, you can use him and pay him, if you underestimate us, oh, I pity you.
The strength of an African man is in his concepts, though the hero may tarry, he must be unraveled. Tell them that my Bakery said so.it's me, LionKing George

2011, My first story

According to the Tradition of  Africa, Beauty starts from home, this solely applies to all issues of life.
therefore, for writers, writing should start from our selves...what is it about me that you have not known yet?...all my told stories are different parts of me, Baking them for my people to read.. yet there is one great secret i will tell you today. it's about my friend...

My heart was my closest friend, always giving me directions that have made my world beautiful. Some of its wishes seemed weird but I achieved them all. Fighting to keep my best friend happy was a big challenge to me. Sometimes I wondered if devil had taken over the entire partitions of the inside, sometimes I felt God’s presence in the veins and arteries …only then, my heaviness and vengeance were dissolved into forgiveness and freedom.
The science of my spiritual man was what I could not comprehend. My actions were not determined by my conscious being. I had taken some risks that I would wish not to think of, I had dumped those things others envied of me. Sometimes it seems to me that I have another existence outside my physical. The stories I have heard about me were not my actions, sometimes I dream them and they come to pass. I knew then within me that I was a mystery.
Before I discovered the warrior that fought with me and against me, I was begging God to recreate. It was my early primary school days, earlier than that, I was supernaturally intelligent and did extremely well in school. I was the smartest amongst my friends and people envied my childhood wisdom, yet it was not me. My behaviors were the actions of the unknown. I was an audience of my words. And my victory gave me no joy. My teachers knew me by name, giving me the merits of someone’s actions. I knew it must not be so, and then I strived to understand.
I listened to stories my father told me, I discovered my ancestors were wise and famous. But that was not the answers to my problems.
I listened to my mother’s own stories, I discovered that my great grand parents had the power to turn to life lions, and our generations could have inherited it, it’s weird though but that was not my problem either.
My problem is to discover this entity that leaves my life for me. If it’s a man, he says my words for me, he takes great actions for me and he wrote my exams without my contribution. If it’s a woman, she makes me popular and wise but I needed to know.
At the age of eight, I set out on this journey, with patience and a burning urge that I could not quench. I looked around for a friend to tell my problems but no one seemed right. My father could be the right person but I did not want to scare him, then I could only find my heart very close to me, so I made it my close friend.
I set out to the remote parts of my village, where no one was at sight, sometimes I climbed trees and hid amongst the green leaves, and then we discussed my situations.
The first day I had a formal meeting with my heart was on the 16th of March 1990. I sat under a tree, in a forest, a few kilometers away from my father’s house. Where should I start, I exploded in tears, sobbing with passion and grieve, then my heart pleaded on me to stop, promising to be my friend, and to share with me, every secret that worries me. Why was I created like this, not being able to have absolute control of my actions, why was I created like this, doing things I did not know about? Then my friend laughed, welcoming me into the realm of supernatural consciousness. He said I was a wise man, that I will be celebrated all around the world, that I shall be a counsel to kings. He spoke like an old man, and I asked him how old he was, he laughed again and told me that age is a success of vanity, counting originated in the world and he is not of the world. Where are you my friend?, he answered that he was far from me, that even my death does not alter him. Then you must help me my friend. I do not wish to be great for those actions I am not in control of. I do not want to be heard, speaking words that did not come from my own mouth. I want to be celebrated for the integrity of my virgin concepts, my actions. You must come very close to me my friend. I have a place for you beneath my chest, secured with the toughest bones in my body. I think it will be safe for you in there.
There was a brief silence, but I broke it with tears, please accept my request I pleaded. And he said he had conditions to make
What other condition will I compromise, when I have been tortured by the unconsciousness of my own actions? Living in vengeance and regrets
He told me something about the place I prepared for him, it would have been a nice place to be, but there is a single bone there that was removed to be recreated. It’s in the hands of the great molder he told Me., but very soon it shall come back, with jealousy it will occupy the space, never wanting to share any bit of it with anybody, not even my closest friend.
That was a sad story to me, and I argued immediately, pleading on my friend, then he said to me that he would come and stay at the tips of my hair, but oh no, I knew the story of Samson and Delilah, my hairs may not be the best place........(to be continued) if you have interest in publishing my work, getting it transformed into a video documentary or short film, write me and it's done.

my june diary

June 2010

Sometimes it gives me concern what I have done to my country as a writer, I keep feeling biased, I have not done much to bring this change that I have dreamt for, I looked back at my great stories; I have told some amazing stories that influenced campuses, yes when I was still a child, yet I had felt guilty when I consult my spirit and lift the brushings of fiction that beatified my stories, then I felt I have fooled the public.

I don’t know if it is with my conscience that I wish to reveal my June Diary. Just a summery of it for my readers to Judge, if they Judge it well, then I shall subdue my conscience and stand up tall to demand for this change that I want in Africa

Early this June I was leaving the life of a robot, waking up at early hours of the morning, preparing for work with few lines of prayers on my lips and billions of expectations because of my faith. I wondered why I would pray long this June when there is no sin in my system and all I could pray about is a grant of my expectations.

I was feeding my eyes in lust with good pictures of new friends I make in the internet, hoping to hang out with them; though with me, I felt it was a mountain of fantasies that I am climbing.

Mountain of fantasies? Well not so sure because I believe in everything so it never occurred to me that my ego drove me.

I met some beautiful ladies I would have loved to go out with but Abuja to me is play with the rules or plug the skull of a life Rubicon.

JUNE

The month opened with surprise but off course June has been a memorable month in my life. Four out of six of my mother’s children celebrate their birthday in June, as careless as I am, I hardly know who owns 2nd, 3rd or on the 23rd but I believe those days to be my closer ones birthdays. But mine is January, yes zodiac aquarium. That’s what I am. I remembered CHIBYKE.s birthday call on the 2nd of June and I off course gave him a call. He’s my elder brother and he is a priest. As a computer science graduate of UNN, I wondered what he was enjoying in missionary works, but I wrinkled in believe when I saw the passion of believe of God in him.

He sounded cracked on phone that early morning of 2nd June, but I pardoned him for he preaches a lot. He was glad to have heard from me and with his ever encouraging manner, he liked my call. He is always glad now that God has given us basic understanding of life.

He asked me which state I was and I told him, then he asked me about every of our other nieces that we all loved onyinye and chiamaka. So lovely I will call them.

After chibyke’s birthday, my mind was flamed into the spirit in me to acquire more, and then I started concentrating on my daily online writing job. A lot of other old-time friends that I poked again on facebook, it was there birthday also.

Then on the 4th of June, chinonye called me when I was in the office. as my mood tells me, my mom was always in my heart and my aunty Teresa who is married to a cannon in the Anglican but above all, I could only talk my problems over with CHINONYE, because she lives like a Christian she lived with me in ENUGU, we were reading physics together. She is married to an Anglican senior priest so she behaves like a Christian young girl. Then she was 24years old. I had to wish her happy birthday I missed it that 3rd June and on the 4th morning she called me. After her quarrels and my pleadings, she took care of my in competency right there on the phone and that is the uniqueness she has. I slept that forth night four states away from her but with good wishes that will make us change great gifts and snaps.   TO BE CONTINIUED

Script for Sale (OBUM)

"OBUM" is a feature  screenplay of adventure and childhood curiosity and fate...a cinema story that will lobby the emotion of our audience...fate, superstition and reality, a revelation of the lives of an average child in a tropical savanna...

In September 1989, it was all rains in my village, a bad moment for obum and i. we were stocked in the house because of rains. the new bow that we bought were not experimented, not until this Saturday aft noon, the weather was bright and little birds were singing.

Though obum's father warned us against the mountain python, we had no choice but to compromise and haunt the mountain grass eaters.
nevertheless, with our chirpy chirpy haunting style, we pursued an antelope to the base of the obalagu mountain. at one time, we were looking for our victim's hideout, at the second look around, we discovered that we could actually view some new structures in the university of Nigeria Nsukka which is not up to two miles from our village. we actually took some time out to appreciate the topography and structures. obum told me more about the inside as he has been allowed to tour the campus in search of pipe born water. i jealous him and regretted why my own parents would not allow me to tour the campus in search of water too.
As we were standing around with our back towards the rest of the mountain, we heard an intruding noise that shuffleded the grasses and an alarming yell of an antelope. i concluded that our target antelope has been captured by the python. i was startled to my hairs so i wanted to pick to my heels but obum drew me back and signaled me to squat with him to the lowest base of my ability. i accepted though strictly in confidence to obum's bravery in haunting; from the angle we were squatting, we could feel the python roar on the grasses till the noise faded away. obum explained to me in whisper, how squat-still-acts, is the proved way  to conquer mountain pythons. the python sees anything still  as an ant-hill, though with it's clean sight, it could barely distinguish colors. so we assumed the still position of an ant-hill.
As the reaction calmed down, we slided down to the base of the mountain with caution, to create less distraction to the python and it's pray.

I was following obum's crawling style, until  we got to the extreme base which was more grassy, obum  stood still , he was staring at something on the ground, i tapped him to move on but he turned to me with tears on his face. i was overwhelmed with  curiosity as i asked why he was crying and he pointed to me eight black eggs in a nest. it was actually a bird's nest and that was no reason for obum to cry. i told him that, but he whispered to me with a voice full of sorrow that he will die soon.

Chasing the Sun

Screenplay Marketplace in Nollywood
Script Title:  Chasing the Sun
Type:            Screenplay
Fomat;          Feature Lenght
No of pages: 116

I got used to facebook chat that I could not let a day pass by without saying a word to my close friends online. Anna-Tomasson and I met online as I asked a physics question on my wall; She said she had a journey to make to Africa and it’s a physics expedition.

I was reluctant at first to tell her that I’m in Africa but the physics she mentioned compelled me to open up. I told her that I was a final year student of Astro-physics and may assist her with information about physics in Africa, the idea I thought would make her stay but she simply told me that she’s got information enough to bring her down and may need my assistance only if I’m somewhere close to Jos in Nigeria. The coincidence appeared pre-arranged so I kept my location a secret and decided to know her story first.

We shared physics ideas and as time went by, we developed something close to love. I was not confused when she told me on phone that she was coming to chase the sun in Africa though I playfully asked her if sun was hiding here. She told me about her effort to develop a coordinate system which she would use to map a super-nova remnant. I knew what she wanted and I jealoued Africa for that. I knew it was a good thing to take autumnal equinox into consideration too and I was glad she did. I told her it would take place somewhere in Jos during the middle of September and that it will last for twelve hours. She then assured me that she was coming by September with a Schmidt telescope. She said it belonged to her father and when she mentioned that, her voice became low and sober so I suspected a hidden story about her father and I suspended my interest to know more.
Ugwuja George Chasing the sun at Ugwu Obalagu, Olivet junction, Uwani in Nsukka

On the 27th of august 2008, Anna arrived Nigeria and I was at the airport as we arranged. That was the first time I independently had a female guest from outside the country. I did hang out with girls in school but the arrival of Anna gave me a feeling of physics and emotions.

She did not see the idea of lodging with me in the same hotel to be wrong, she saw it as an opportunity for us to get acquainted to each other and before we moved to Jos from Abuja, we have really had a nice time together.

Anna was twenty one, tall, with  French hair. She confessed her feelings that Nigerian guys would not be romantic but I proved her wrong when I gave her a posy and a kiss. Along the line, I bought another line for my phone as I realized that Anna was getting jealous about the other girls that call me from school. On the other hand, I needed some privacy with this naturally attractive blond girl.

We got to Jos on the 29th of august and Anna wanted us to lodge in the town again to familiarize her with the cold weather but I objected with a clear interest to get to Barki-Ladi on time.

Even though we were chasing the sun, we did see mysteries because  we got to Barki-Ladi, life was really a kind that we read in ancient stories. Virgins were seen naked with their breasts pointing at a straight line angle. I was embarrassed to see my father land in such a distant situation.

We stayed two days with them while I ate roasted yam and  oil; Anna did taste it though she had her packaged foods. In Barki Ladi, we lived like different creatures because we lacked unity in language. Anna loved the sights though as we prepared to advance deeper where we will establish our observer’s point in the local horizon, Anna’s new friend insisted to come with us.

Sani was between twelve to thirteen though what I jealous most was his sense of adventure. He was the one villager that did not see Anna as a ghost. He came into our tent severally to play local chess with Anna. Even though I was jealous, I pardoned him because he was the only hunter that had eight varieties of bush meats and I tasted all within our two days stay with them.

I needed Sani and so it was, at every point in time, we diverted because of just some dung he saw in the bush. Some dung was from dangerous animals while some were the Fulani Herdsmen and their Cattle, Both were dangerous. We traveled for six days pursuing the base of a cloudy mountain that was when Anna conveniently revealed to me that her father came for the same mapping eight years ago but was killed in a fight between the Christian and Muslims in Jos. I pitied Dr Tomasson for dying. I told Anna that our country will never fight again.

On our way, we haunted and we killed, I had a handgun which I hid all the way from school and I thought Sani how to use it. When we got to the base of the mountain, I was mounting our telescope while Sani was resting our tent. I looked towards the valley and saw two children on animal skin. One had a blond skin and a long hair, We pursued them…As we followed their track, we advanced into the forest where great secrets were discovered...

Is it an answered prayer to Zibara? or are there going to be tragedies as even the prince of ZOWEN prince jimmy dean escaped to the government town in search of his love………did the two cities come together to become ZOWE-THO or did Zibara die before the next season of sherry tyrell festival? Condy's Mistake

You can also write in your view in publication business as articles in this category could be forwarded to publication houses.

UNPUBLISHED; …. unlike other days, no figure would be seen in school till thirty minutes before the resume time. But today, condison heard footsteps. I believe it should be the ugly skeleton. It has been killing for generations, yet not satisfied.
Condison listened again for twenty seconds, but could not hear even a single shake. The breeze also stopped shaking the flowers. There was total calmness everywhere. He now consoled himself that he misapprehended the fall of a leaf to a footstep. He would not finish, when he heard a controlled sneeze. “should it be the ugly skeleton?” condison was at alart and so many things crossed his mind. “should it be those killers my father arrested their fellow, should it be just a thief, do I believe in ghosts?. All these and lots more was in his mind when he unintentionally made an audible statement “I must know what this may be” when he finished, he realized he has made an implicating move. He blinked his eyes, to beat away sweats from his eyebrows. As he raised his leg to walk, he uncontrollably brought it back to it’s origin. He was still in that state when suddenly the footsteps increased and a cry was heard.
“condison..condison! where are you?” the caller, no doubt has been crying for long; for the voice is filled with fear and terror. Maybe that ugly skeleton has victimized someone. That ugly fool, or was it about doing so?. Then, codinson must act fast to save a life or to fall a victim. which ever………

The boys opened the door and wanted to enter “hei” John shouted. They saw that the car inside was very beautiful and decided to remove their legs from their sandals. They left their sandals on the road and entered the car. Uncle Zik took them on the one mile journey home and when they alaited at home, they started rushing back bare footed to pick their sandals; but, would they find it? What else happened?. Well, these boys did a lot of things more. I wrote the story last year and I have a preview of it on a VHS tape. You can reach me for negotiations…..

A TRUE LIFE STORY

I started writing when I was very tender and have not had much of formal education. It was my eleventh birthday and I wanted to surprise my family and friends with a short story of my past and what I would love to be in the future. After locking myself up in my brothers room; where I believed would create a beautiful environment for concentration and inspiration, I came out with a little piece I called my foundation story.

As my cousin stood up to read it in the midst of eleven people, all eyes were on me and I started sweating on my palms even as the quietness of the room marveled me. As he finished, there were echos of laughter and my spirit was filled with joy. Suddenly, my brother summoned quietness and asked me if I knew why they were laughing. I simply answered with certainty “because my story is interesting”. He discarded my answer saying that I wrote grammatical blunders. For me, I was not discouraged, I vowed to be a writer hence my first story made eleven people to laugh out of control. I did not care why they were laughing, all I knew was that I entertained my eleven quests on my birthday with my story.
